Momentum: The Secret Force Behind Progress

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Muse Vibes, where I chat about all things that inspire and challenge me. This is episode number twelve, and today we’re talking about something I mentioned briefly in the last episode: momentum.

In that episode, we discussed comfort zones and how all journeys begin with one step. But after that first step, you need something to help you keep moving forward. That something is momentum.

Let’s dive into it.

What Is Momentum, Really?

In a practical sense, Momentum is the strength or force gained by motion or a series of actions. Once you have energy behind a thought, desire, or action and keep doing it, momentum kicks in, making everything a little easier.

At first, taking action can feel heavy and difficult. But as you repeat it over time, you lose some of that initial resistance. Your mind and body begin to adjust. What once felt challenging starts to feel lighter and more natural.

The Playground Lesson

Remember those merry-go-rounds at playgrounds? You would push them to get them spinning, and once they got going, it became easier to keep them moving. You didn’t have to push as hard anymore.

Momentum in life works the same way. It becomes easier to sustain once you build up a little force behind what you’re doing. The trick is not letting things come to a complete stop—because starting over takes a lot more effort.

Keeping momentum alive is like tending a plant. You have to water it, nurture it, and protect it from distractions.

Momentum Breakers: Life’s Little Disruptions

Life happens.
Sometimes it’s a pebble in your shoe.
Sometimes it’s a full-on thunderstorm.

Distractions, setbacks, or even unexpected detours can knock you off balance. When that happens, you have two choices:

  • Take the time to reset and then move forward
  • Stay stuck and lose your flow

Creating momentum in your life means increasing the things that move you forward and minimizing the things that hold you back. This applies to projects, fitness goals, building self-confidence, or any other dream you are chasing.

Clear the Path Before You Start

One way to build stronger momentum is to eliminate distractions before you even begin. Clear the path. Get your environment, schedule, and mindset aligned so you can focus fully on moving forward.

Even when you hit a bump in the road, if your focus is clear, you can get back on track much faster.

But remember: the longer you stay off-track, the harder it becomes to rebuild momentum. So when life throws you off, don’t wait too long to stand back up and keep moving.

Momentum Works Both Ways

One important thing to remember: momentum doesn’t care if it’s moving you forward or dragging you backward.

Negative thoughts, habits, and actions can build momentum, too. A little negativity repeated daily can spiral quickly into feeling stuck or overwhelmed.

That’s why it’s so important to catch yourself early. Interrupt the negative momentum before it becomes a powerful force of its own.

If you feel yourself spiraling, stop feeding that energy. Choose a different thought, action, or perspective. Redirect your momentum toward something positive.

Persistence is Key

Persistence—showing up and trying again even when it’s hard—is what eventually builds unstoppable momentum.

In the beginning, everything feels harder.
When you first learn to ride a bike, or skate, or speak a new language, it feels awkward and overwhelming.
But after a while, momentum kicks in and it gets easier.

That same principle applies to everything you want to achieve.

If you stop using a skill, you lose it.
If you stop moving toward a goal, you drift away from it.
Momentum needs energy in motion and consistent attention.

It’s Okay If It Feels Hard at First

When you’re coming out of a comfort zone or trying to restart after a break, it might feel incredibly difficult. I know that feeling well. Picking yourself up mentally and physically can be a struggle.

But I also know that once I push through those first few steps, once I get moving again, the momentum returns. And with it comes ease, flow, and excitement.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly.
You just have to keep moving.

Final Thoughts

Momentum is a powerful ally when you’re trying to create change, build confidence, or achieve goals. It can carry you forward with less and less resistance—but only if you are willing to put in the work.

Sometimes, putting in the work simply means not giving up.

Remember:

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that an airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.

Accept who you are, right where you are. And if you want to do something different, take that first step, build a little momentum, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if needed.
