How to Break the Cycle of Overthinking and Reset Your Energy
Hello everyone, and welcome back to Muse Vibes, where I talk about all things that inspire and challenge me. Man—it has been a wild, crazy month. I recently took a trip to visit family, which always brings its own kind of stress. Between packing, flying, and navigating airport security (hello, shoes and electronics), my stress levels were through the roof. Family visits, while important, can leave me feeling mentally and emotionally drained.
When I returned, I knew I needed a bit of a detox—something we’ll dive into more in a future episode. But today, I want to share something especially important. With all the chaos happening in the world—natural disasters, heat waves, and heartbreaking tragedies like the Surfside condo collapse right here in my own backyard—it’s easy to get overwhelmed by fear, sadness, and uncertainty.
As an empath and a highly sensitive person, I have to be mindful of how much energy I give to everything going on around me. I choose to stay informed, but I also work hard not to let those emotions take over. Because if I fall into that pit, I can’t help anyone, including myself.
That’s why today, I want to focus not on the tragedies, but on how to lift ourselves up, especially during hard times. I want to share a simple, powerful three-step technique I use to reset my energy when I start to spiral.
Step 1: Notice the Negative Loop
The first step is simply to notice. Ask yourself, Am I thinking too much about something negative?
If you’ve already done what you can, or if the issue is out of your control, yet you’re still stuck thinking about it, that’s a sign you need to break the cycle. Overthinking becomes a habit, and chronic overthinkers tend to replay conversations, second-guess every move, and imagine worst-case scenarios over and over.
I’ve been there—replaying images in my mind like a messy movie reel: What if that happens to me? What if it’s next? This kind of thinking doesn’t just kill productivity—it tanks your mood and drains your energy.
Worrying doesn’t solve problems. Action does.
So the first thing to do is acknowledge the loop. If you find yourself trapped in mental repetition, it’s time to disrupt the pattern.
Step 2: Break the Loop
Next comes action—the interruption, the break. Think of this as throwing a wrench into the wheel that’s been spinning out of control. You need to snap yourself out of the trance.
If you can move, physically get up. Shake off the energy. Walk around. Stretch. Dance. Anything to shift the vibe.
But what if you’re somewhere you can’t move—at work, in a conversation, or a public place? That’s when you have to mentally interrupt the loop.
Try visualizing yourself breaking out of chains or snapping awake from a trance. Mentally say, No more. Picture yourself shaking off the funk. Train your mind to shift—no matter where you are.
Here’s a quick story: I visited my dad in Virginia Beach when I was younger. I tried to open a window in his old condo and accidentally shattered the glass, cutting my hands. I panicked. I was sure I was going to die. My dad—a military vet and tough guy, though deeply loving—saw I was in shock. After trying to calm me down gently to no avail, he pulled a bit of tough love. He reached for his war belt and said, If you don’t stop crying, I’m going to smack you.
Now, my dad never actually hit me, but that moment snapped me out of my panic. It worked. The point is, sometimes we need a strong jolt to shift our mental state. Whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional, find a way to shake yourself loose from the spiral.
Step 3: Reset with the Breath
Once you’ve disrupted the pattern, it’s time for a breath reset—my favorite tool for grounding and regaining clarity.
- Inhale: Calm, focused energy
- Exhale: Fear, negativity, and overwhelm
Do this as many times as needed until your energy begins to settle.
Then, bring yourself back to the present moment with affirmations. Tell yourself things like:
- I’ve got this.
- I can redirect my focus.
- I am smart. I am calm. I am patient.
- I can get through this.
You can’t always change your environment, but you can shift within it. Speak life into yourself. Interrupt the negativity. Use your words to build yourself back up.
We are the masters of our emotions. And while I know emotions can be intense—especially for empaths like me—I also know there’s great power in that intensity. When we direct it, it becomes a force for growth.
Your Emotions Are Valid—But Don’t Stay Stuck
I’ve come to accept that I am a deeply emotional person. My heart and mind absorb energy like a sponge, and I have to be more conscious of where I place my focus.
But I’ve also learned that emotion drives action, and the stronger the emotion, the more powerful the action.
Some lessons only come through life’s storms. So let the feelings come, process them, and then release them. Grieve if you need to. Cry if you need to. But don’t stay stuck.
Let go of what doesn’t belong. Make space for hope and new beginnings.
Final Thoughts
You are allowed to feel it all. But you are also capable of shifting, healing, and rising.
Accept yourself—right where you are. And if you want something different, take action. Try new things. And never be afraid to ask for help.
As always, I’m not a therapist or a physician—just someone sharing their experiences, hoping they help someone else out there feel seen.
